Uncovered - Dangerous Secrets of the DOT Helmet Standard

Your DOT motorcycle helmet is not as safe as you think. "Outdated" doesn't even begin to describe this conspiracy. Last time FMVSS218 saw a major update, only two countries had internet and NASA coined an obscure new term called "global warming." Yikes.

  • Amazon lists a ton of helmets in the motorcycle helmet section that don't even have DOT approval. I bought one for $20, admittedly just to use on a bicycle since it looked like a bicycle helmet but it had a full face shield. Sure enough, it has about the same amount of foam protection as a bicycle helmet.

  • In the end of the day, it's the riders choice. I personally don't think helmets should be mandatory at all. I wear one because I value my head, but we shouldn't be forcing others if they don't want to. However, people should be educated, if they want a better helmet, buy one that meets the other standards.

  • DOT has always been meaningless here in Oz. When it was decided that the Australian AS1698 standard was protectionism and hurt consumer choice in a world of global markets (not to mention being outdated with it's similar basis on the American ANSI Z.90 ), I'm glad we didn't continue to turn to the Yanks for road safety standards. They aren't exactly world leaders with their continued lack of training/licencing standards, or even mandatory helmet laws in some states. At least ECE 22-05 tests a broader area and the chin bar.

It is actually a genuine safety concern and it makes a large difference on frontal impacts whether the shell catches anything or not. it was a slap in the face of snow though for sure, considering there's helmets that are fim but not snell

  • If you are looking for independent testing to realistic standards check the Sharp system run by the British government. Randomly bought in stores, and tested in different sizes with several impacts each to criteria based on the Hurt report. I work as an aerospace engineer in interior safety, so I'm well qualified to assess the validity of their testing. I advise my friends and family not to wear anything that's below 4 preferably 5 star on their list. Have a look and judge for yourself at sharp.dft.gov.uk/

  • What's most appalling is that this is such an easy fix. All the NHTSA needs to do is come up with some credible standards based on existing research and require that manufacturers perform testing at an independent test lab. They do this for electronics for instance and it works fine. Is the helmet lobby really that strong?

  • So DOT means nothing but how do all the other standards stack up against each other? ECE 2205 is less than ECE 2215 but is it the same/better or worse than Snell? the UK Sharp ratings are much like DOT but they actually give a rating not just a pass/fail so that would put them over DOT IMO? And there is a new one but I can't remember its name.

Physically i see no reason why being knocked off a chair or table will affect the safety of it. in reality its marketing wank and manufactures just want your money. i've heard about bs marketing such as the famous "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" which is just made up to drive sales.

  • I watched this but am based in the UK and we don't use the same standard. However, UK govt states all crash helmets have to meet this standard: British Standard BS 6658:1985 and carry the BSI Kitemark UNECE Regulation 22.05, a European Economic Area member standard offering at least the same safety and protection as BS 6658:1985, and carry a mark equivalent to the BSI Kitemark They also link to this website, which posts reviews on how helmets hold up. sharp.dft.gov.uk/ Also in the interests of completeness, there is this doc which explains what UNECE Regulation 22.05 is about www.unece.org/fileadmin/DAM/trans/publications/WP29/Leaflet_Helmets.pdf Hope this is useful

  • I whole heartedly believe the DOT standards should be updated to match world levels, but then that would put all the Snell people out of work. I guess what I would say is to look for the ECE approved sticker, seems they cover more testing and actually do it. Never did I fall into the "if it's DOT it's good" I fell into the "If the specific manufacturer builds a Snell helmet do they really make a less safe helmet that is their DOT model?" Would they risk that liability? Plus what was not mentioned here - the infamous Motorcyclist helmet test where it seemed the more common brand names among the lower cost helmets actually tested up to most all Snell standards of the day, safer in some areas in consideration of what should have been the standards. Plus pointing out the Snell standard at the time was poorly spec'ed out. That test was what forced Snell to actually create a separate standard for motorcycle helmets. It was supervised by a far more authoritative individual than our Fortnine host, it was set up and supervised by Dr. David Thom, a renown name in motorcycle safety. Just sayin' Snell isn't the end all. I wore a non-Snell HJC CL15 road helmet and now wear a Bell MX9 adventure MIPS helmet that also does not have the Snell endorsement. Do I believe either helmet company builds those helmets down in comparison to their Snell helmets when it comes to safety? I kind of doubt it, they'd have a hard time explaining in court why they build a less safe helmet without notifying the buyer that it isn't as safe as the Snell helmet. By the way one time I tried to find the helmets that tested bad. What I found at the time was no helmet brand or style I'd put on my head. I didn't see any Bell, HJC, or even Vega in the ones I saw at the time.

The damage has been done, people go by ECE and SNELL, in 5 years MIPS will be standard so even if DOT kicks itself up the ass and becomes brilliant; well who is going to trust DOT reformed or not? Why would we trust our heads in an organisation which took 50 years to realise 60 year old legislation was unsuitable when SNELL and ECE have been saving people’s lives for decades longer....
