What happens when you tell a bunch of car designers to go build a motorcycle? Well, this. The Honda PC800 Pacific Coast. Overlooked genius or just another Failblog entry?

Don't they have the goldwiing for this
next up, the motorcycle designed for people who fly........ planes?
I regret not buying one of these cheap when I had the chance. Not a ❤️ bike. But practical.
Nice engineering
I honestly believe a carcycle like this will be the "True" green revolution. Tesla started it but in the end people from the future will look and wonder "Why did people view a car that weighs 3 tons as green, just because the drivetrain was electric?"
I owned a ‘96 model for years and loved it!
I LOVE the throwback theme!
You forgot the people who ride on dirt and through the air
I got to ride the Pacific Coast and didn't think of it as a car substitute, but just as a plastic covered motorcycle. My main impression was how underpowered it was. At the time my everyday ride was a Honda Shadow 700 (yes, there was such a bike) so I expected the PC to feel a tad quicker, but that was not to be. If anything, I thought that Honda was really trying to sell a "Goldwing lite". I never bought one, but could have lived with one easily.
PC800 classic bike.
I love riding... im on a 150cc... I can flow with traffic and afte work its nice to have some wind in my face and think while driving home.
Gold wing?
Unfortunately it still didn't catch on,. It was made between 1989 and 1999 with a two year gap from 93 to 95. and was overpriced then. but it has a following. Made for the American market and also sold in France and other parts of Europe apparently well it was never brought to England but we have some grey imports over here. I have got a 1995 model and its done some 60. 000 miles and the engine just like most honda's is bulletproof. It is big and heavy but then so is the Pan. It has an 800 cc twin engine and a top speed around 110/115. One has to throw the anchor out to stop it or ride sedately and very safely with a good braking distance in front. Unfortunately as I am growing older and have knee probIems I am selling it as i now have a Suzuki Burgman 650 automatic and that is a brill bike. She gives me more power when I need it, has a great carrying capacity, no gears or gear changes to worry about just twist and go and though still heavy is not as heavy as the PC.
When I watch this guy it reminds me of the good days of top gear
Why has it always just rained in motorcycle commercials? The streets a slick and more dangerous then
A good question! Here in Vancouver we don't have much choice. The two types of weather are 1- raining and 2- just rained. ~RF9
Bikes for car drivers: The remedy for congestion and extraordinary material waste without the indignity and misery of relying on mass transit and walking. And of course, for the slower urban environments where mass transit and *literally just walking places* are even slightly viable, lower speeds make for safer conditions (higher frequency of crashes, much lower severity).
I just subscribed and there's nothing you can do about.
Im 20 i actually liked the goldwing for a while its like a cruiser sports bike and that thing there looks brand new
In a Korean war era Science and Mechanics ( i think that was the magazine) i remember seeing an era motorcycle that had this similarly styled totally enclosed look, albeit with lotsa chrome and such. When this Honda came out, I thought they must have seen that same picture.
This is the Honda Goldwing. I often see them here in Germany. Well exact this modell not because its too old but the new ones yes.
Honda have a history of building some god-awful 2 wheeled turkeys, although they were technologically advanced in many cases they were also unbelievably bland & unexciting - this is one of them.
Looks too much like a bacon transport vehicle
for a brief second in the beginning i thought i was getting rick rolled
so they reinvented the motor scooter . Although parts of it look like the honda elite which is a similar but without the need to cock you leg over it , and more of a car experience so maybe it didnt die .
Could you make the next star wars?
I had one 1995, I loved it. If I could have had cruise and radios I still have it. I rode it 63000 miles. Filters, oil, and tires.
That's the same bike, "wayfarer" in GTA San-Andreas
Top 10 anime crossover in history
Hey, what is this a crossover
I have an 87 Helix. The scooter version of the PC800.
So if you want to show me your time machine that would be awesome. You are not from this time :P. Don't get me wrong. You are awesome.
GTA San Andreas fellings. Gotta love the Wayfarer
OMG these count as motorcycles? I always thought they were a moped that you could take on a highway. Admit it, they are.
Loving the 4:3 format
dam it looks ugly from behind
The point about congested traffic at the end isn't really discussed in this comment section... it hits close to home for me because it's also a reality where I live (and I guess it is too for others who live in highly urbanized areas). Before the pandemic and also right now when my city is starting to open back up more, heavy traffic still gets in the way of life. I got myself a motorbike but I'm still learning to be comfortable when riding it. It's not that easy for me though because is my country, the Philippines, is known for a... not so ideal standard for motorcyclists. I could drive a car but that would just be me contributing to the problem. Just wish something gets done, I really want to get into riding motorbikes but I would prefer a more comfortable environment for it.
I love honda pc but never been so brave to buy it
Dude even the aspect ratio this video is Amazon
That trunk is a massive flex. Honestly, I'm intimidated.
There was nothing innovative about the PC800 that hadn’t already been seen in either a Goldwing or any of the K series BMWs from earlier in the 80s. The PC800 wasn’t as good as either a K series or a Goldwing, that’s why it failed to be commercially successful.
I owned one of these for a few years back in the early '90s. It was actually a pretty good bike and incredibly convenient as a commuter. Sure it didn't handle like a sport bike but Mr. Smarty pants should go back and try riding a stock mid/late '80s sport bike and he'd find out most of those weren't all that great either by today's standards.
3:00 ice your beer
Gag me with a spoon. No, really.
I wanna know what love is
The editor here deserves the 👍 like
Why he move his head weirdly ?
Overhead Dealer define the DN-01....Do Not Own One
I loved my cub 70 and 90 in the 80s
I like it
Man after seeing you create this work of art, I'm oddly craving to see you make a video on the Honda EZ90 Cub from the early 90s
I always thougt it looked "funny", but still I like the design, i understand the philosphy behind it.. Though it is not meant for me, i'd recommend it to those who search a problem free bike.. A lady down the street where i lived had one, she often went out riding and she really enjoyed it.. the PC 800 reminds us that in order to have fun on a motorbike, not everyone needs a bike where you sit with your elbows below your knees...(but i do like that kind of motorbike.. that is why i have two ducati's)
I love that design, the innovations, I don't get why such a great concept fails so hard.
Spoiler alert, read this after watching. “As blank as a teenager’s search history”...lol genius. Ryan nails it every single time. The gut punch finale to this latest brilliant, clever and hilarious work of art the hugely important point of environmental and practical positivity 2 wheels offers over 4...once again F9 proves awards for bike videos futile as he’d win everything every year...
I want my 80s back .. NOW😒
Fortnine always have the best like to dislike ratio
Production quality is beautiful!
Back ground music please bro 👍
The "PC" in PC800 stands for "personal car"
Speed boat on wheels
He really missed the message that Honda was selling. The target was women. Most women can't handle a Gold Wing. Honda had tried the market with the CX500 with the upgrade to the Interstate. The Pacific Coast was the next evolution in the move to get more women on their own bikes. Not on the back seat of one. It would seem that the V-twin cruiser market, won that war. Most women chose the low rider bike. Lower and easier to handle.
TBH, I kinda liked these when they came out. The weight put me off but compared to the cruisers of the day, and the sheer utility of the thing, it had some appeal.
Q U A L I T Y C O N T E N T
I can’t believe he didn’t mention the goldwing
Looks like an st!
I thought it was a good motorcycle. Sure was easy to drive. I was driving in the horrible traffic in the bay area every day. Always a traffic jam. Made driving my 25 mile one way commute a lot faster than my truck.
Two-seater -- Adam could come along too! :)
Now, I would say the PC800 is nippy, but the PC police tell me I have to say, it's made in Japan!
Dude, you roll commentary like Jeremy Clarkson- Good job sir. I subbed. Would love to collab; but anyway.... I point you... :-) Regards, -ThePatUltra
vancouver.craigslist.org/nvn/mcy/d/north-vancouver-honda-pacific-coast/7256409895.html the bike is currently for sales
Damn it! Now i want one.
I had a lego mini mount of this bike omg
Never realized how entertaining R9 is at normal speed
This is the greatest car video I’ve ever seen!
The 80s vibe is legit, down to the T, techno that is!
I have the very same bike. Its a great ride, smooth, comfy and go forever. Body plastics are hard to find but its a great commuter or touring motorcycle.
I owned one! (Because I'm a nerd) Upgraded to a 2004 ST1300 which I bragged about the "power windows" (because still a nerd) PC800 was a great first bike for me. At the time there was a huge fan base on PC800.net
that trunk thijng is just freaking clever that bike is perfect for an ev conversion
The one my friend had was a good machine. BUT, IT LOOKED LIKE A GIANT VESPA! The hell Im riding that without a disguise.
Except the PC800 was not designed by Acura.
It was a beautiful design far ahead of its times. Soon Elon Musk will come with a futuristic ebike design like this and all his followers/disciples will praise his original genius especially when he combines it with Solar roadways in a Hyperloop tunnel. It will generate more power than it uses (with some "creative" accounting)😉😁
PC800 on my radar for about 20 years, but I've still yet to own or ride one. Someday..
But Mr Honda, that's why we make and sell the Civic. Yesterday I watched in disbelief a guy towing a trailer in the rain, behind a 650 GS or some other. Couldn't undermine his dedication.
That bike has such unique lines, it’s not something that I dream about but every time I see it I stop dead in my tracks. I can’t explain it.
I would love one of those, or an nm4, if I could find one.
And to get cagers onto bikes, there needs to be an incentive. Compact vehicles get tax breaks, as do hybrids. Bikes are small and efficient. Give bikes a tax break and watch sales go up.
woke up in the hospital learning i lost my bike and memory along with it. I wish you all safe riding. i still dont know what went wrong. just my helmet is gone and i gotta regain memory. one day ill back on the road with you all and thats and thats all i can wish for. from the dead for a month and back i wish you all the best.. keep on riding brothers.
Smart man. (But, that sounds like an understatement.)
As an nc700x owner I appreciate this video
As a proud owner of a 1990 PC800, this video makes me very happy. I get teased sometimes for it's looks, but I ride a unique piece of motorcycle history.
Well, that's the grandfather of modern scooters such as x-max etc, so the whole RnD didn't go to total waste
It just lacks a steering wheel, that's why it didn't sell well.
Nice video. Full disclosure - I live on the Pacific Coast.
Great bike but the absolute worst to work on..
I need one now!!!!😡😡😡
I love japanese engineering
The PC800 taught me a lesson. Never judge a motorcycle until you've ridden it. I worked at a Honda dealership on Vancouver Island when the PC was introduced. I snickered at it, until I took one for a test ride. Linear brakes. Comfortable seat. Smooth engine. Great handling. Awesome weather protection. And the "trunk" was functional as hell. The plastic was fairly easy to remove too. A highly underrated motorcycle, IMHO.
Back around 1991 I sold motorcycles briefly. Honda offered a huge bonus to the salesperson who moved a PC800. It was a practical motorcycle, but it said “I AM my father’s Oldsmobile”. Also, the DN-1 was nicknamed Do Not Order One in some dealer circles.
This review has so much AESCTHETIC!
I want one so bad
Had one. Reliable as a brick, comfortable as a sofa and the personality of a toaster. I`ve had RD 350`s, Honda 750`s, a GS1000, YZ`s, TZ`s, and an Italian "Harley"350 Sprint. so I do know personality. RD`s are ADDICTIVE.
