The Killer Tricycle Banned by the US Government

This cultural hot potato of the 80s had everything - flawed design, thoughtless marketing, irresponsible dealers, young lives lost, sickening injury rates, bad parenting…the lot. Here’s the messy story of the three-wheeled ATV.

  • The only fun I have had on a three wheeler was deliberately riding it on two wheels for pretty much the entire time. If you are always halfway into a rollover it doesn’t surprise you lol. I’d rather have a three wheeler than a quad though. I’d rather know I am on something dangerous and ride it correctly than have a false sense of security and be going hard when it bites.

  • I had a 110 for the winter toy.race dirt bikes in the summer i miss that shoe stripper. It stripped shoes right off your feet on a bad day in the woods and bounced better the a basket ball and a high jump.

  • This entire ban was bullshit. Are they safe. No. But if you know wtf your doing they are no more dangerous than anything else. Btw those atc250R's where absolute monsters. Put many many miles on them.

  • I had a Honda ATC 200s for years, and the only time I got hurt on it was completely my fault. I was riding at a new location and I didn't walk it before riding it. I just hopped on and gassed it. A couple of cracked ribs later my lessson was learned. I blame 60 Minutes for doing an assasination piece on them leading to their ban in the US. Like most government intervention trying to protect us from ourselves, it was a large amount of bullshit wrapped around a kernel of truth. And my Honda would float in water, as long as I wasn't on it. I'd ride it in mud on the weekends and take it for a dip in a shallow ditch or canal to clean it off afterwards...just ride it in and hop off. Keep the engine running and the tires would splash enough water to get most of the mud off. I wasn't worried about cracking the engine because it had been ridden in deep mud, so it was already wet the entire time. Lots of fun and very controllable with a little experience.

  • We had these things as kids, not that long ago for me, I think the biggest issue was the advertising. We knew the dangers, we learned to ride and moved on, the worst wipe outs any of us had were on atvs not an atc. The issue was they advertised them for kids and not as the somewhat dangerous and easily flipped machines they were

  • Anyone who couldn't ride one with a certain amount of common sense and respect for its limitations, didn't need to ride one in the first place. And any parent who let their child ride one too large for their age group, didn't deserve to have children. There is an inherent risk in everything we do, how you approach it determines the level of risk.

What’s sad is he was one of the most popular kids in his high school but after his accident nobody came around to see him. He talked and thought slow due to his brain injury. I never knew him before his accident but he is a nice man and is intelligent. It just takes him longer to get his thoughts out.

  • so did you guys not get the newer model honda trikes? the big red, then the 250 sx with reverse? we used them for years here in new zealand on our steep country farm. they were terrible things but far superior to having a 2 wheeler when it came to traction and ability to carry things, we even made footpegs for the front so one of us kids would have to sit on the small front carrier to keep it from flipping! we were all so happy when the 4wd quads arrived!

Still have the 250x. Wish I kept the others as well. Still have my 87 Banshee quad in mint condition except the aluminum wheels are beat up from the rocks in upstate NY Never had an issue driving the trikes until we got the quads. Once we use to driving quads we couldn’t ride the trikes without flipping anymore. The trikes made sharper turns then the quads when you were use to them.

  • My friend had one of these in highschool. They were really unstable and if you went around a corner slightly too fast you were going over. One time I was riding it in a field and went around a corner too fast, and like a dumbass i put my foot down to try and keep it from going over. (I was used to dirtbikes and wasn't thinking) it pulled my foot under the back tire and flung my shoe about 50 feet. I didn't get hurt but you have to be somewhat careful when you ride one of these. So if it starts to tip, bail the fuck off and try to get away from it lol.
