The “starter bike” is a myth. Why buy something “good for learning” when you can choose a motorcycle to love forever? We picked our favourite off-road, sportbike and standard motorbikes that - coincidentally - happen to be easy to ride [Details below]

  • Last year I purchased a 2007 Kawasaki KLX250s for $1700. I love it! Carbureted and all. It’s super reliable, goes 60 on the highway, tears up the single track trails, and takes me just about anywhere at 75 mpg. I would agree that it’s a perfect mortar cycle to learn to ride on. Now all I need to do is convince my wife to get on it. Thanks FortNine! My wife just watched this video and maybe, just maybe, she’s more convinced....

  • I had an old kawasaki ninja 500. ( 86 model so I am sure it was called something else.) my daughter got mad when I sold it recently... I had to gently explain that I love her very much and there is no way in hell that I was ever going to give her a bike that has a power to wieght ratio that puts it in the superbike class.......not for a first bike!!

  • Can you do an EU edition (if there's a big enough audience for it obviously). Were all stuck on a 125cc for our first bikes and it seems to be impossible to find any decent videos talking about options.

  • Fortnine... Hi. I'm trying to find a video of yours, towards the end of which you mentioned some statistics regarding congestion. It was along the lines of... "if just 10% of drivers swapped their cars for motorcycles, congestion would be reduced by 40%. If 25% of drivers swapped, congestion would be eliminated entirely". Those are sobering statistics. I want to post that vid on my FB page as an educational thing and, stupidly, didn't do it at the time I first saw it. Hope you, or your viewers can help me out. Thanks.

  • Hey y'all, I am a bicyclist who wants to cut my 2 hour bike ride into a bite sized chunk. I ride a mountain bike and love trail riding, I really want to head to the mountains and travel around but I also want to take my bike through some backwoods trails to do some solo camping. I can find Honda CR around my area for around $1,000, the price of most commuter bikes. Should I get one, grow familiar and use it to tour around?

  • meanwhile in the UK - a 50cc restricted to 28mph (below the speed limit of most roads) is a perfect beginner bike that is 100% safe. Well, at least my lexmoto hunter 50cc has a years warranty for when something inevitably goes wrong and goes a bit faster. A 125 would be much more appreciated though

    • No, I'm 175lbs and the 250 can barely get me to highway speeds. The new KLX300 dual sport is a much better choice at the same price. Even better for just a little more would be the Suzuki DR400.

  • I did a lot of experimenting, testing rideability and just plain learning in the woods. That was many years ago. I knew back then it was better to learn on a small bike and go down under slow speeds than it was on a heavy bike in traffic. Now that so many idiots ruined it for everybody else by acting like idiots in the woods, all of the off road places around here are now posted. That's idiots! Barry

  • Love my RC390! Been riding it for a year and a half and just did my first track day here in Las Vegas and had a blast. Made some stupid mistakes which the bike forgave me for and didn’t punish me by losing it suddenly or throwing me off like a 600 super sport or 1000 super bike would. I even met an older 50 year old dude riding his tricked out RC390 having a blast while also lapping my noob ass. The only gripes I have is that the RC390 R gets the real adjustable WP suspension while the regular RC390 gets the non-adjustable knockoffs made for roads in India. Even so, the basic suspension is still better than the competitions. I did violently bottom out my suspension by braking hard on a pothole and had to get new fork seals. No engine troubles so far. Have a 2018 model though I’m jealous how the 2020 white version looks. Also a refresh is coming next year and it looks like the bike is losing its racing DNA by gaining higher clip-ons and lower foot pegs.
