  • You forgot the most important thing of all to check: THE GAS TANK. A large percentage of used bikes I see are from riders that stopped riding for a few years and finally decided to unload their bike, at which point the gas is flat and the tank is made of rust. A rusty tank can destroy an entire fuel system from the pump to the injectors, etc. depending on how long it was run with a bad tank. Tanks are extremely expensive to replace and refinishing is never quite as good as a stock tank in good condition. IMO, if it's older than 2-3 years and you suspect it has sat any length of time, check the gas tank before anything else. Most of the things in this video are problems that occur after tens of thousands of miles of hard riding, but most used bikes I see are pretty low mileage and many of the things he talked about will be fine, it's the old gas and the ruined fuel system that will give you a very bad day.

I was honest seller so I show all photos and bills to buyers (people usually dont do that), and I was honest about all details of the bike and bike is in perfect condition now, but buyers didnt buy my story and they all wanted to buy bike cheepes as possible. I still own the bike and it is not for sale anymore tnx to suspicious and cheap buyers

  • Number one thing to look out for is modifications. Nothing screws up a bike quicker than (most people) turning wrenches on it... over tighten / cross ahead / under tighten / stuff misaligned or out of sequence reassembly / breaking off of mounting tabs / etc. Plus few after market items are equivalent to OEM parts in function, fit, and quality of materials and construction. The second thing is the condition of the chain... you can tell a lot about an owner by the condition of the chain. In any case, the quickest way to drive down value and drive away savvy buyers IMO is to modify the bike. An all stock bike with a well maintained chain is what I look for.

  • While new bikes/personal watercraft/etc have never had greater demand, Covid has been a fantastic time to buy used from areas under lockdown. I got an $12k bike with new warranty remaining and 3k on it, for $6500 out in Boise (listed at 6600, I offered 6500 sight unseen, when Idaho was shut down. Had my cousin go ride it, put 100 down, and I flew in 3 days after restrictions ended. The bike was immaculate, I couldn't believe the build job. (VSTROM, ready to go unpaved. Full Givi, etc.). . The tools idea, allowing a seller to open up about other stuff, brilliant observation. People get nervous if you are looking at them, taking attention to the tools and measurements or whatever will help them relax and begin to loosen up. If a seller never loosens up, you are going to have problems. If you show up to see a bike that has a new unused motor in it, and it is an old motor that worked in another capacity (happened to me), or something is not adding up, just stop burning your time and leave. Best to only do business with people with good cash flow, good English and good manners and maintenance habits. Stuff that doesn't look good, is rarely good. A pig in lip stick is never good, avoid a new paint job at all costs. An infrared temp gun can catch motor temp irregularities before start up. An oil test takes a bit, but put $100 non-refundable down, and wait. If the test sucks, you saved thousands... If it's good, no loss and you know what you have. Maybe ask, "What's your bottom dollar?" Or, figure out what's fair and offer that, and shut up until they respond eg "6,500." Silence. Wait. You stay silent, wait. The first one to blink, will always lose, just a fact. Practice with a friend until you are comfortable.

  • I bought an R850 BMW that fooled me. The low fuel light didn't work, but I just blew that off. Turned out it didn't work because the fuel pump had been changed to an aftermarket unit. Whoever did the job broke the the sender and butchered the fuel pump bracket. That caused the bike to die under braking if the fuel went below 3-3.5 gallons. The dopey clot also left a paper towel in the tank. Worse was the front master cylinder. It was leaking, so the seller jammed a small rag in the boot. That was bad, but worse was that he'd tried to fix it, gave up, and didn't tighten the pushrod screw back up. It backed out while I was on the freeway, no front brakes. Cheap to fix, but I could have been killed. The bike showed a lot of signs of bad work once I started pulling things apart. It's issues were hard to spot. Ran great, handling was decent, but if I had known what was wrong with it I would have either walked away or paid way less. Got rid of it after 18 months. 1 week after I bought it, I saw an R850 for sale for $300 less with less miles and in better condition. Fuck me if I can't take a joke.

  • When I was selling my old v strom I had a guy turn up who was doing the whole flashlight thing. He also nit picked every little thing. It wasn’t the nicest bike on Kijiji, but it was the cheapest and most farkled v strom, and all his little comments just annoyed me. The bike sold the next day to someone who was more interested in getting a read on me and a quick look at the bike. Next time I sell a motorcycle I’m just going to trade it in at the dealership. Less money, but I hate dealing with internet buyers.

  • You have a bike for sale for $10K and a buyer comes by to look at it. He hands you a $500 cash deposit and his DL so you let him take it for a ride but he never returns. You call the police and give them the DL and they find the guy but he doesn't know anything about a $10K bike and wants to know how you got his DL. You just sold your $10K bike for $500. Sounds like BS? It happened to a friend and his Hyabusa.

  • As much as I like buying bikes, I absolutely hate selling them! The amount of prospective buyers I've had that lowball me, don't show up, or have done zero research on the bike they are dealing on makes me want to just leave them in the corner of the garage and not even bother selling them. Lol, I once sold a Wing to a guy that gave me kind of a low offer, but also a good story about being a divorced dad and wanting to take his daughter out on bike trips for affordable holidays for them both. He seemed genuine and a nice enough guy so I took the offer, 4 hours later it was up on Kijiji for 2.5 times what he paid for it! Lol, lesson learned.
